Stories of SuccessStory#1 Bridging the Gender Gap from withinZienab is a nine years old girl living in Al Nawashi village within the Governorate of Thi Quar (Nassiryia). Zienab used to fallow the orders given to her by her younger brother Ali. She does everything for him including: cleaning, cooking, providing safe drinking water, and even sanitation services. Ali took Zienab for granted!Women and the Environment Organization (WATEO) conducted a training workshop in Al Nawashi village. Most of the women in village attended the workshop including Ali’s Mother (Um Ali) Zienab and Ali attended the workshop with their mother. During the training, the facilitator asked a difficult question. Zienab was the only one who answered correctly. The crowd gave her a round of applause. Ali turned to Zienab and said “Wow, I did not know you are that clever! Next time when I have a question, I will ask you.” It felt like winning one million dollars! The gender gap was bridged from within the community. Giving Zienab a round of applause bridged the gender gap in a tribal community. Story#2 First Things FirstWhile working in Sadr City, WATEO experts met Um Hussein, a 55 year old woman who lives in Sadr City in Iraq, who raised an interesting question: why they—referring to the government, can’t provide us with water or pickup the trash or fix the electricity, or fix the sewer? Um Hussein did not talk about politics or electing her representative. Instead, Um Hussein, talked about day-to-day life. What matters to her is getting safe drinking water for her family and making sure the trash is picked up- i.e. what matters to her is living in a safe and healthy environment.
